Balanced LiteracyThis summer Grandview teachers had a chance to learn about the Optimal Learning Model from Regie Routman. We will be using this model with our reading instruction this year. It begins with the "I Do It" in which a skill or strategy is demonstrated by the teacher. Then "We Do It" where the students and I do a shared or interactive reading or demonstration. Students then continue the "We Do It" by applying their learning, working with partners, and guiding each other. Finally there is the "You Do It" where students can independently practice and apply the skills they have learned. We will move back and forth all day with this model while following the McGraw-Hill Treasures reading series.

Daily 5
During our guided reading time, students will use the Daily 5 framework to build their literacy independence. Students will make choices between Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, or Word Work each day. I will work with students in small groups and conference with each student weekly to set goals and track progress. Work that your child brings home is specific to his/her needs as a reader.
Sight WordsThere are 11 lists of sight words that your child needs to know before the end of the year. Each list has 20 words. We will work on them during class time, and a packet is kept in your child's homework folder. Please practice the sight words at home. Remember, these are words that cannot be sounded out. We say "I see it and I know it!" - in 5 seconds or less. I will test students on sight words weekly. As each list is mastered, your child will get to add a sticker to our data chart.
